My All-Time Favourite Cookbooks

Cooking at home has become one of my absolute favourite things to do for so many reasons, but I think the biggest one is that it reminds me of writing a book — in the sense that you create something from nothing (and get to marvel at your scrumptious finished product). There’s also a calming aspect to chopping and cooking that I’ve learned to appreciate more as I’ve gotten older.

My boyfriend and I really enjoy cooking together (although, he is a far better chef than me so I humbly accept my apprentice status). Geoff is more creative in the kitchen (going off grid and doing his own spin on dishes), whereas I’ve always been more of a “rule-follower.”

In high school, I loved when teachers handed out syllabi in advance so I could see ahead of time what I needed to prepare for — the same goes with cooking: I love following recipes and knowing what is expected.

Saturdays are for pouring over my fav cookbooks, making a list of ingredients, and grocery shopping — and Sundays are for meal prepping (I need to split it up otherwise it feels like a daunting task).

Maybe someday I’ll colour outside of the lines and add a dash and a pinch extra of whatever it says in the recipe, but for now (and for the sake of everyone’s taste buds), I trust the experts and am happy to re-create their delicacies.

With the holidays approaching (SO DAMN QUICK), I thought I’d share my favourite cookbooks with my cyberspace pals as they make the greatest gifts (because, yet not excluded to):

  • They’re coffee table books you keep in your kitchen (i.e. they’re gorgeous to have on display in a different part of your home other than the living room)

  • They INSPIRE you to cook more at home

  • They apply to all ages and cooking abilities

  • They are beneficial for your mental health (there’s a lot of science that supports the positivity of ‘creating something for the sake of creation alone’ (vs. profit) — I’m not savvy enough in all of the jargon to spew stats…all I know is that the act of gathering and preparing food truly is good for the mind, body and soul)
